'COOL' site for college search

College Opportunities On-Line, a new Web site from the U.S. Department of Education, provides detailed information students and parents can use to research 9,000 institutions of higher learning.

Nicknamed COOL, the site enables you to search a vast database of statistics compiled by the National Center for Education Statistics and its Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

You can find large universities and small liberal arts colleges, specialized and community colleges, plus technical colleges and trade schools.

The system is simple to use. First go to College Opportunities On-line  and then follow the link to the IPEDS COOL page, where you can search by
--region of the country or state
--type of institution (such as public 4-year, or private 2-year)
--student body size

Or, search by the name of the college or city. For instance, a search for Poughkeepsie, NY, turned up four institutions: the four-year colleges Vassar and Marist, as well as Dutchess Community College and Dutchess BOCES School of Practical Nursing.

Detailed information on an institution includes:
--Web site and phone numbers
--Three-year statistics on costs
--Financial Aid awards
--Degrees by field
--Enrollment by gender and ethnicity
