What should I know about filing the FAFSA online?

FAFSA on the Web

(The following content was previously available on guideforparents.com)

The U.S. Department of Education has made it easier for students to apply for financial aid for college. A program called FAFSA on the Web lies one click away, and brings you to an easy, online way to complete all the forms you need to apply for a federal grant or loan.

"FAFSA" stands for "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" and has existed for years in paper form. But now, FAFSA on the Web adds speed and efficiency to the process.

Here are some advantages:
--Students will get their application results 7 to 14 days faster than if they mail a paper application.
--Their confidential information is secure.
--They need to answer only the questions that apply to them. Skipping other questions makes filling out the application easier and quicker.
--Applications are edited in the process, reducing the number of errors on the forms.

Students will need to establish a PIN (personal identification number) and be prepared with family income records and other data (such as a social security number).
