What is the PSAT/NMSQT?

PSAT/NMSQT ™

(the following content was previously available on guideforparents.com)

The initials stand for Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

It's a test that high school students take in October of their junior year — or even sophomore year — and it gives them practice for the SATs. Like the SAT, it measures a student's verbal, math and writing skills.

Since the PSAT/NMSQT includes actual SAT questions, it gives students a good idea what the SAT is like, and enables them to compare themselves to other college-bound students around the country.

Taking the test also allows students to participate in the Student Search Service® to get mail from colleges, and to enter National Merit Scholarship competitions.

The test is usually giving in October. Students should see their guidance counselor for advice, and help in applying. (Applications are NOT available online.)

For further information and study aids for the PSAT/NMSQT, look at the PSAT website of the College Board, which administers the test. The College Board also gives information about Scholarship and Recognition Programs  attached to the test. See also the website of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

I think that you should put a sample test link in the article like you do for the SAT. Other 11th graders and I need the scholarship money.
